LATEST UPDATE: Monster Hunter XX is coming to the west, y’all! That’s right, Nintendo Switch owners outside of Japan can finally play a localized version of the game as the renamed Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate gets an Aug. 28, 2018 release date. I already have the English version so I've started adding the localized Quest names as I verify them. I'll start with the Village missions because those can be soloed easily then go over the Guild missions after that. I mean, I’m sure some of you have noticed that I just sorta-kinda made up the English translations for the mission names. Perhaps I should just leave them for posterity, hmm? I will also add the new translations for the monster names as well. Anyway, it should provide a nice change of pace from Monster Hunter World!

  1. Okay so we've all read these posts about people b.ing due to the lack of G-Rank and how this is an act of blasphemy and that the developers are worse than Hitler and Stalin combined blah blah blah. Anyway, hopefully this thread will serve as a bit of insight towards newcomers of the series and why they should not be deterred by the lack of G-Rank in Monster Hunter Generations.
  2. This is a list of Guild Key Quests in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (and Generations) that need to be completed to unlock higher star quests and Hunter.

UPDATE 8: Wanna hear a story? Actually, make that stories. For folks interested in Monster Hunter’s JRPG spinoff, I’ve put together a handy-dandy and most egg-cellent Monster Hunter Stories Guide. Yes, I’ve still got a terrible pun habit.

UPDATE 7: Hi y’all. In preparation for Monster Hunter XX for the Nintendo Switch, I’ve updated some key parts of this guide. All Village and Guild Quest mission information is now up to date for folks who have yet to clear everything or reach Free Rank by breaking the rank cap. On a related note, I also updated the Monster Hunter MHX to MHXX Save Transfer Guide to include instructions not just for the 3DS but for the Switch as well. All I can say is, there’s an app for that. Anywho, I hope this tides everyone until Monster Hunter World comes out!

UPDATE 6: Key Quest information is steadily posting in Japan, y’all! I’m starting to update this guide as I speak, starting with the Guild Hall G Rank quests as I assume that’s what most folks are interested in. Per usual, I’ll start verifying these after I get the game but feel free to chime in or e-mail me if you notice anything. Also, don’t, uh, take the English translations for some of the quests too seriously.

UPDATE 5: Monster Hunter XX is almost upon us (yay!). Unfortunately, I got sent two copies of MHX instead due to an order mix up (boo!). Now I’ve got my fingers crossed that my return does not get lost in the mail or I’m out $100-plus. In the meantime, I’m seriously considering just downloading the digital version. Regardless, I’ll make sure to update the key quest guide as soon as I get some information.

Apr 02, 2020  Must complete all 5★ Hunters Hub Key Quests to unlock. Increases the level of Palicos scouted by the Palico Scouts. Adds Wyvern Amber Ale to the ingredients list. Monster Hunter Generations offers you also a very extensive multiplayer mode alongside all the adventure in single player. Together with other hunters you can the monsters of the game world track and bring to guild quests to track. A key element is your Hunter Rank. This determines can explore her what tasks and difficulty.

UPDATE 4: So anyone itching to be 'Double Crossed?' Check out our first article on the followup up to Monster Hunter X and Generations, 'Transferring Monster Hunter X save data to MHXX.'

UPDATE 3: Hello, Barrage Earrings fans. To help you out, I have now included a section on how to get all 10 Arena Quests that you have to clear (Rank A) to get them.

UPDATE 2: All Village and Hunter Hub Guild Quests are updated! I will also continue to update the Village Requests as I get them.

UPDATE 1: Howdy, folks. Got my review copy of Monster Hunter Generations and I am now updating this guide with the localized English from the Western release! I have finished the Village campaign but might take a bit of time to go through the latter half of the Gathering Hall or, as they're called now, Hunters Hub quests as I've pretty much been soloing the game prior to release. In the meantime, this guide has initially been verified with the Japanese version so you can simply check the requirements and they will still work for Monster Hunter Generations. I am also leaving the Japanese quest names for folks who want to continue using this guide for Monster Hunter X. Any thoughts, comments or contributions? Feel free to share them in the comments section.

The guide

Hello, fellow hunters. Or Nyunters. Or is Nyanters? I’m so confused.

So after feverishly refreshing the U.S. Postal Services product tracking page, one of the two Monster Hunter X games I ordered from Japan finally arrived. Not sure why the other one hasn’t been scanned since leaving Los Angeles a week earlier. Hopefully, my local post office doesn’t have any Melynxes..

In the meantime, I’ve been scouring Japanese “kouryaku” sites for Monster Hunter X info in preparation for my long trek through the various Village and Guild quests. I figure I might as well share all this information I gathered with you, my fellow hunters in arms. Or paws.

Here’s a list of key quests in Monster Hunter X for folks who prize mission efficiency, complete with the Japanese quest names and my poor attempts at translating some of them into English (notice that some of them are based on quests from older games!). I’ll make sure to verify the list and add more information as I go through the game but feel free to drop a note at the comments section if you notice anything wrong or just want to pump up my ego. After all, flattery will get you everywhere with me. This list also will be updated with English info following the release of Monster Hunter Generations in the West!

Sub: Wound Gammoth's legs, 900z

— Took me a while to figure this out in the Japanese version but my early toiling is now your gain. This basically requires you to do quests from the Pokke Village chief to unlock. At some point early in the game when you talk to this village chief, you will unlock the 2-star mission “Slay the Giaprey!” (ギアノス10頭の討伐). Finish that and you will then be able to talk to the chief again to unlock another 2-star quest, “The Mountain Rough Rider!” (雪山の荒くれ者), which requires you to hunt a Bulldrome. Wrap up that mission and talk to the Pokke chief again and you will get the 3-star mission “The Shadow in the Mountains” (雪山に潜む影) to hunt a Khezu. Finish that and talk to the chief again and you will get access to the 3-star quest “No Go on the Popo” (忍び寄る気配), which requires you to gather 3 Popo Tongues. Talk to the Pokke Village chief one more time and you should unlock the Gammoth (Gamuuto) mission. This mission grants access to shards at the Pokke Village cave with the giant sword.

The Thunderclaw Wyvern 玉の閃電

Main: Hunt an Astalos (ライゼクス/Raizex) 5100z

Sub: Break the comb of the Astalos, 900z

— This one requires you to talk to the Kokotto Village chief. Notice a pattern here? Just like Pokke, you’ll eventually have an opportunity to talk to the Kokotto chief to unlock the 2-star mission “Slay the Velociprey!” (ランポスたちを狩猟せよ!), which requires you to hunt 10 of the beasts. Finish it and talk to the chief again to unlock the 2-star “Slay the Velocidrome” (ドスランポスを討伐せよ!) quest. After that, chat up the village again until you get the 3-star “Defeat the Yian Kut Ku” (大怪鳥イャンクックを倒せ) mission and finish that. This will then unlock the 3-star quest “The Wyvern’s Nest” (潜入!飛竜の巣), which will lead to the Astalos (Raizex) once finished.

The Entrancing Water Dancer 淡紅の泡狐がたゆたうか

Main: Hunt a Mizutsune (タマミツネ/Tamamitsune) 5100z

Sub: Wound Mizutsune’s head, 900z

— This time, you’ll need to talk to the Yukumo Village chief to unlock the 2-star mission “Bye Bye Jaggia” (渓流のジャギィノス退治). After that, talk to the chief to get the 2-star quest “Arzuros the Azure Beast” (青熊獣アオジラ). Report to the chief to unlock the 3-star “Royal Spit Take” (ロアルドロスを狩猟せよ!) mission. This will unlock the 3-star quest “A Forest Fracas” (ざわめく森) where you hunt a Bulldrome after talking to the Yukumo Village chief, which then leads to the Mizutsune (Tamamitsune) mission.

Updated 10:49 PM EST Dec 12, 2019

The first thing you’re going to need to do is select a file to save to (you have three), and create your character. Your character is more or less fully customizable (aside from body types, alas), so go wild. You can even give yourself a bright pink beard. Unlike in 4 Ultimate , you will not be customizing your primary Palico right away. That will come later.

Towards the end you will be asked to select a panel scheme for the touch screen and a hunting style. Don’t worry, these can all be changed in-game to your heart’s content, and are not set in stone. Once all is well and done, you will be sent to your very first village: Bherna Village . Welcome to the world of Monster Hunter !

There is no storyline in this game, not even an excuse plot, so you have a lot more free reign. This comes at the cost of very little in the way of tutorial or guidance, but don’t worry, we’ve got your back. So first things first! Red speech bubbles indicate that you must talk to the person to unlock more quests and progress. So make sure you hit up all of them. Yellow speech bubbles are optional. Any facility that you haven’t used yet will have a yellow speech bubble and when spoken to, you will receive a short tutorial/overview of what they offer. Additionally, random NPCs with yellow speech bubbles will usually have some sort of village request , which we will cover later.

So first, talk to the Bherna Village Chief . He’ll inform you that you’re here to work for them as part of the Wycademy Guild. That’s about all the plot you’ll get—you’re a hunter for hire, a mercenary who, for the duration of the game, will be able to work for Bherna Village and a variety of other villages too. Check out the Villages section of our guide for a detailed rundown of the four major village hubs of this game!

Once you’re done talking to all the red speech bubble people, be sure to visit the Palico Ranch. There you can customize and recruit your first ever Palico, meet Neko (means “Cat”), and a variety of other things. Check out our Facilities guide section for more details. Additionally, be sure to visit your House , the little grey building. You’re a lucky little hunter and you have your own Housekeeper , a very capable Felyne who will handle a variety of tasks for you, and also is where you can access DLC.

After all of this, you can then talk to the Bherna Gal . She’s the girl in the blue by the Purr-prietess, a Felyne cook who will cook your meals for you. From here, you can accept Quests. You will see two tabs, Training and 1 Quests* . Training Quests are where you will find tutorial quests. Remember in previous games how you had to do all this mandatory herb-farming, potion-making, meat-cooking stuff before you can take on the real quests? Well if you’re a series veteran, you no longer have to do them! And if you’re a series newcomer, you should probably do these. They aren’t mandatory and they have some modest rewards, but will be worth your while if you have never played Monster Hunter before. Training Quests, due to their straightforward nature, will not be covered.

In order to progress to 2* Quests, you will need to complete Key Quests , quests the game has decided must be cleared. Of course, the game is also quite secretive about which quests are key. The Bherna Gal will sometimes drop a few hints, but for the most part you’re left on your own. Clearing every single quest will give you a nice, pretty check mark, so that’s one way to ensure you’re getting everything done. But if you’re in a hurry, we’ll let you know which quests are the important ones.

You are now officially an expert on how this game will progress!

…Oh, you’re not? Well, don’t worry, the other sections of this guide talk about all of these things more in-depth, and we’ll be covering them as we go.

Quests will be displayed in this guide in a table format so that they are easy to find and read. Pertinent information will be displayed in a very short paragraph below said quest. Quests without any really important notes will just be displayed in one continuous table. With the exception of 1 Quests* , all quest tiers will present the key quests first , then the non-key quests, so you can see what’s important.

What Is The Key Quest For Monster Hunter Generations Full

Find the Ferns

Objective: Deliver 8 Unique Ferns

Location: J. Frontier

Subquest: Deliver 10 Unique Mushrooms

Notes: This is the first quest on the list and is a key quest—the closest thing you’ll get to a mandatory tutorial and thankfully so. Unique Ferns are Account Items . They have no use to you as a hunter and exist to be delivered to clients or converted into resource points. You can find them at plant gathering spots alongside actually-useful items such as Herbs, Antidote Herbs, etc. The area you will be at is the Bherna Village area, Jurassic Frontier. Cheesy name aside, this is a pretty basic area that contains a diverse number of places—open fields, caves, a wyvern’s nest… A good starting area as any. Fern gathering areas are everywhere, such as areas 1 and 2.

The subquest, delivering 10 Unique Mushrooms , involves gathering anywhere you see mushrooms on a log. Areas 6, 4, and 11 are a good start. When you return to base camp, be sure to deliver to the red box , and deliver subquest items first!

Fungal Hunt

Objective: Deliver 5 Abyssal Mushrooms

Location: J. Frontier

Subquest: None

Notes: Completing “Find the Ferns” unlocks this quest. Abyssal Mushrooms can be found only in areas 9, 10, and 11 of Jurassic Frontier. Their item description and their name notes that they only grow in darker parts of the forest, so take that to heart as you search. This is a key quest!

Wipe Out!

Objective: Slay 10 Maccao

Location: J. Frontier

Subquest: None

Notes: This is the third Key Quest. You are tasked with slaying little mooks called Maccao. They’re the bright green dinosaurs that are running around Jurassic Frontier making a nuisance of themselves. They’re everywhere too, so it’ll be easy to kill 10. No subquest this time!

Complete any one of these quests (I recommend you deliver some Unique Ferns to get it over with) and then talk to the Bherna Chief again. You will be given an official introduction to Village Requests!

Village requests come in two flavors: Quests and deliveries. A re-quest (ha!) will take the form of a standard quest and when completed, you will usually talk to the person again for a reward (which usually takes the form of resource points , secondary currency you can use for a variety of transactions). Deliveries require you go to the Palico Ranch to talk to the NPC Neko (means “Cat”) and then deliver the required items. Afterwards you receive a reward.

Your very first request will come from the Palico Ranch. You’ll probably first notice that the Dojo is open for use, but you have more important matters at hand right now! See the girl by the big Moofah? In case you haven’t met her yet, she’s the Palico recruiter. She needs some help, too.

Subquest: None

Notes: This is the final Key Quest. Jaggi are smaller purple dinosaurs. Players from 3 or 4 Ultimate will be familiar with them. There are going to be some larger purple dinosaurs running around, those are Jaggia , female Jaggi, and will not count towards your total kill count. They are annoying though so you might want to kill them anyways—they yield two carves instead of one, as well. Area 5 spawns Jaggi continuously and you can also check out areas 8 and 9.

Get to it!

URGENT: Vaulting Outlaw

Objective: Hunt a Great Maccao

Location: J. Frontier

Subquest: Slay 5 Maccao

Notes: This is your first ever quest where you’re hunting a large monster . These monsters are going to be much larger in scale than the small Maccao or Jaggi, have a much larger diversity of attacks plus a more sophisticated AI, and can be targeted with the L-trigger camera lock. You got this game for these.

Sorry to disappoint you though. You first ever large monster is a Great Maccao , the souped up alpha male of the Maccao, and he’s not as impressive as you think he is. Head to Area 5 for his introductory cutscene and start wailing on him! Be sure to bring Paintballs to throw at the Great Maccao to mark him on the map—he travels using paths that you, the hunter, can’t access, which may throw you off a little. The subquest, slaying 5 Maccao, should happen automatically as they get in your way and die.

Completion of this urgent will unlock the 2* Quests. You’ll get some cooler bigger monsters now, I promise. You’ll also unlock more ingredients at the kitchen, so go make some new recipes! And, finally, you will be able to use the services offered by the Flight Cattendant . This allows you access to the other three villages: Pokke, Yukumo, and Kokoto Village . These are all villages present in previous Monster Hunter games and will come with their own slew of Village Requests. It’ll get pretty messy pretty fast but we’ve got you.
